Girls varsity basketball falls to Greenville 51-46

On Monday February 13th, the Lady Rangers fell to the Greenville Yellow Jackets in a tight game, losing by six. As Valentine’s Day came around, the Rangers were looking to take vengeance and leave Greenville broken-hearted. The Lady Rangers had a valiant effort, but in the end they were the ones who got rejected.

With the passion not yet inflamed in the hearts of the girls, they got off to a slow start. After being down 10-0 at the start of the first quarter, the girls started to play with some determination.

“I think we just get down on ourselves,” Junior Madi Winter said. “Once we score a couple baskets, we can get our heads in the game.”

They stepped it up on offense while simultaneously devoting more effort to defense. The quarter ended with the Rangers trailing 13-5.

FHC came out of the huddle and into the second quarter with more passion. Unable to get many good looks inside the paint, they started to settle for outside shots. They made their shots with extreme accuracy and made a dent in the Greenville lead.

“Paula Shield came in, knocked down a couple three’s, and got us really hype,” Madi said.

The Lady Rangers jogged into the locker room trailing by seven, 20-27.

As the game advanced into the third quarter, the Ranger defense got more aggressive.

“In the first half, we struggled with allowing a few key players on Greenville to consistently score,” Madi said. “In the second half, we worked on double teaming and eliminating potential baskets.”

The Rangers continued their hot shooting and converted inside the paint. FHC was able to make it a one possession game. They closed the gap to three.

Moving into the fourth quarter, the Rangers now had 8 minutes to give the gift of defeat to the Greenville Yellow Jackets. After a couple minutes of play, FHC was able to shrink the deficit to one. As the quarter continued, the passion of the Rangers began to decrease after continual free throw shooting by the Yellow Jackets. Greenville was slowly pulling away.

“Together as a team, I think we need to work on playing a full, solid game of basketball,” senior Maddy Smith said. “We have some moments where we let up on both ends of the court.”

The night ended with the Rangers falling 51-46 to the Yellow Jackets.
