As a young girl, junior Iman Hammad found herself watching her mother magically sew a ripped bag back together; ever since that moment, Iman has been completely fascinated by the art of sewing.

Of the many, her passion for sewing is truly the most important hobby to her. What sparked her drive in sewing was her life back in Jordan.

“In Jordan, we had no Wi-Fi,” Iman said. “We didn’t have TV most of the time, so we had to find our own sources of entertainment. I got into sewing by grabbing random pieces of cloth and would sew up random things. One thing led to another and I started crocheting and knitting. All things I really love to do.”

She learned to sew from her mother when she was a little girl. The fact that someone’s hands could fix something with a needle and thread was a wild thought for Iman at the time.

“When I was a kid, I saw my mom sewing up the bag I tore,” Iman explained. “I was so amazed, I said, ‘Woah, how did you do that?’ She showed me a sewing needle, then she fixed my clothes, my hats, and my bags. I thought it was so cool. I couldn’t believe you can fix stuff with your hands.”

Her love for sewing has grown into something more than just a hobby. When asked what her biggest accomplishment was, in regard to sewing, she said it was her crochet club. She was convinced by some friends to expand on her talent. So, she went for it and created the Crochet Club.

“I love getting to understand new hobbies, and I am very curious, so if I find something interesting, I want to try it out and see how I do. I also really love understanding how others live their lives through new activities.”

“I love my club,” she said. “The Crochet Club was made this year. I love crocheting and helping others. When I made it, I was so proud of myself. I have people who constantly come in to help crochet and learn.”

Iman is completely shocked by the success of the club and loves seeing how many new people join. With such a positive outcome from her club, she is assured her future will be filled with making clothes and helping other people fix their clothes. Iman has found a way to lend a helping hand through her passion for crochet by providing a safe space for others to learn.

“I really want to grow a business making a clothing line for dresses and wedding dresses,” Iman said. “I really love making stuff and making others happy.”

With all of this being said, Iman loves sewing and understanding others for who they truly are. Her drive to try new things and support others in their journeys are her greatest strengths.

“I love getting to understand new hobbies, and I am very curious, so if I find something interesting, I want to try it out and see how I do,” Iman said. “I also really love understanding how others live their lives through new activities.”

Iman immerses herself in many new ventures all of the time. She is spontaneous in the best way. She loves meeting new people and learning new things. To say she is very busy is a huge understatement. She fills her time with activities that bring her joy and make her a well-rounded person, even more than she already is. Regarding what she likes to do, the list is never-ending. Overall, she enjoys creating new things, spreading love, and teaching others. Iman’s passion and kind heart bring light to the FHC crochet community and will always continue to do so.

Iman’s goal for the Crochet Club is for more people to join and be a part of this vibrant community she created. The club meets Fridays after school from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. You crochet and learn anything you want about it. Make sure to bring your own supplies and an idea, and Iman will be there with open arms to teach you.

“Whatever you want to crochet, I can help,” Iman said.
