Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live in a society where you must follow certain rules and perform in the eyes of others? That is a dystopian setting, which is my favorite movie genre. This genre has so much action, excitement, and adventure captured within its films that it makes for some of the best plots. There are many, many movies out there, but movies that are the best of the best along with a dystopian storyline are truly unbeatable.
The Maze Runner
Starting strong, there is The Maze Runner movie series. There are three movies within this dystopian series, which all surround the same story. The first movie is about a group of boys stuck in what they call the glade. There is a monstrous maze they have to get through to become free from the glade, and throughout the movie, new characters are introduced, and there are several plot twists that are discovered in the end. The second movie is about the same group of teenagers, and they are witnessing the real world and what society looks like through the naked eye. They discover the world is falling apart because of a deadly and irreversible disease that has taken over the human population. The third movie is about finding a cure for this disease that started this whole series. These movies have an incredible amount of emotion tied into them. They make their audience feel confused, heartbroken, relieved, frightened, suspenseful, and more emotions I could not even begin to describe.
The Hunger Games
This next series of dystopian movies is very well-known and loved by many. It is none other than the thrilling The Hunger Games trilogy. These movies are about a society where there are deadly games played, and whoever comes out alive wins. These movies include themes of sacrifice, sabotage, friendship, devastation, and more. People are elected to be in these games, and the government does not care who gets hurt in the process, no matter how young or old a contestant may be. The games are used for televised entertainment and to present the people in power with complete and undeniable control. This entire series has an amazing plot with strong character development and it creates a rollercoaster of emotions for its audience.
Divergent
Last but certainly not least, a popular movie amongst all crowds, many people’s all-time favorite movie, Divergent. It is about a society that is split into five different factions based on virtues. The factions are Abnegation (selfless volunteers and AID workers), Amity (peaceful farmers), Candor (honest judges and lawyers), Dauntless (brave soldiers and police), and Erudite (intellectual scientists). The setting is post-apocalyptic, and it follows a teenager who discovers that she is divergent, hence the name of the movie, and she does not fit into any one faction. This movie has a lot of adventure and action, thrilling moments, and to make things more compelling, there is a love interest. This movie presents the idea of a dystopian world so well, and it pulls the audience in as if they were living in its society with the characters.
There are many perplexing and adventure-filled dystopian movies out there, but these three are the movies I think dominate in this genre. They are all fairly popular and for a good reason at that. The emotions and the sense of bringing the movie to life for the audience is what makes them stand out from the crowd.
