While many popular artists’ glory days are behind them, they still deserve listeners. Those born in the 21st century did not have the opportunity to see some old legends in their prime. Although we are currently blessed with Taylor Swift’s masterful lyrics and Kendrick Lamar’s bell-bottom jeans, we surely missed out on our walk down Abbey Road with The Beatles, or the “Don’t Stop Believin’” era with Journey. To raise awareness among artists that some would consider a part of the dinosaur era, here is a short list I’ve compiled of some people with huge musical talent who should still be recognized.
Goo Goo Dolls
The Goo Goo Dolls are an American rock band that consists of the lead vocalist and guitarist John Rzeznik and bassist and vocalist Robby Takac, as well as different rotating members since the band was formed in 1986. This band experienced its first great success after the release of the single “Name.” However, the song that helped this band break into the music industry was “Iris,” released in 1998. “Iris” spent 11 months on the Billboard Hot 100 and is still a classic that is consistently played on the radio.
I believe that a band shouldn’t be defined by one of their greatest hits but by their songs as a whole. Over the past few weeks, I have taken a deep dive into their music and found that they have relevant songs with an upbeat tempo. Most of their songs have a roughly similar vibe, so they might not be everyone’s cup of tea, although I highly suggest you pay them a listen.
The Beatles
The Beatles were an English rock band that was formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960. These guys are probably the most well-known band on this list. The main lineup consisted of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. They were considered an integral part of culture in the 1960s and the development of the music industry as a whole. The Beatles never stuck to just one specific genre, experimenting with pop, rock, psychedelic rock, and folk.
They are not making music anymore since Lennon and Harrison are not alive anymore, but they are still considered by many to be the best-selling music act of all time. An estimated 600 million sales worldwide were made by The Beatles, including albums and singles. Their songs explore a wide range of themes, which ensures that there is a song for everyone.
Journey
Journey is a rock band that was formed in San Francisco, California, in 1973. They currently consist of Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Deen Castronovo, Arnel Pineda, Jason Derlatka, and Todd Jensen.
They had their most successful time between 1978 and 1988, when there were different band members. One of their main hit songs, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” was released during this era. If you’re interested in rock and metal music, give Journey’s powerful vocals, engaging performance, and intense guitar solos a listen.
There are many more bands similar to these few that deserve to be discovered by the newer generations. In case your parents haven’t cultured you enough, here is your starter guide to get into older and cooler music.

I knew I would love this article when I spotted the pic of Johnny Rzeznik, and the other artists proved to be excellent as well. Nice job, Katty! You have great taste 🙂
