From the moment I first stepped foot into my first country concert, I knew I had discovered a genre that I would love forever. The mellow tunes of sorrowful country music will always have a special place in my heart. From the compelling lyrics of things I can not yet relate to, to the stories the songwriter conveys, sad country is a genre that everyone should give a listen to.
Many stars have been on the rise in the world of country music. Although these artists—such as Zach Bryan or Chris Stapleton—are undoubtedly talented, people should make room to listen to some equally gifted artists that may not be as well-known. As an avid country music fan, here are some lesser-known country artists I recommend listening to.
Noah Rinker
As I stood in the pouring rain, waiting to see one of my favorite artists perform, Noah Rinker’s voice hollowed out from the doors of The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When I saw Rinker perform for one of my other favorite incoming artists mentioned before, Ty Myers, I knew he would be one of my favorite country artists. Before this date, I had never heard of his music, but as I listened to the lyrics and melody of his songs, he quickly became one of the artists I listen to daily. Rinker’s music is the type that lets you feel; it allows you to relate to his music in ways you never intended. He is definitely my favorite singer currently and should be better recognized for his talent.
Ty Myers
With 4.8 million monthly listeners, Myers is one of the more established singers on this list. From his most popular songs, such as “Ends of the Earth,” to others like “Malibu,” his genre of country music varies. As an 18-year-old singer-songwriter, Myers sings about topics that he might not relate to, but through the passion of his voice, he compels the listener as if he does. In his song, “Thought It Was Love,” he sings, “I woke up with a headache today/ ‘Cause I’ve got a mortgage due and an empty bed to make.” Though he was 17 at the time of the song’s release, the issues he addresses relate to a larger audience than just the average teenager. He may not be old enough to truly experience these real-life events, but like a great performer, he allows a larger audience to find truth in what he sings. On March 29, after much anticipation, I was finally able to see Myers in concert. Everything from his character to the way he performs live is the reason why he should be more well-known. Myers is a great country performer and should definitely be in the top country charts in the years to come.
Joshua Slone
Although Joshua Slone currently has no songs out on any music streaming platforms, he is slowly rising in the ranks of country music. I first heard of Slone when I attended the Zach Bryan concert this September. As one does, I looked up the openers to see who would be performing before Bryan took the stage. Slone was one of these, and he did not disappoint. The moment I heard his voice live, I fell in love with his stage presence and his effortless voice. When his album finally makes its way to streaming platforms, it will undoubtedly be one to check out.
As someone who mostly only listens to sad country music, these artists are just a few musicians I recommend listening to. From concerts to a clip on social media, discovering new artists is one way I enjoy listening to music. These singer-songwriters are continuing to gain momentum with each new release, and their music is definitely worth listening to.
