“So when I came to America [in second grade], I only knew Portuguese. The first day of school for me was halfway through the school year, so my second-grade teacher pulled out a Spanish dictionary. She didn’t have a Portuguese one, and she tried to figure out what I was saying [while] I was speaking only in Portuguese about my trip to America. She was just trying to figure out what I was saying, but I was going too fast because English is more slow and Portuguese [is] faster paced. It was kind of funny now that I think of it because it was a Spanish dictionary instead of a Portuguese one.”
