“You promised the world, and I fell for it. I put you first, and you adored it. Set fires to my forest. And you let it burn.”

I laced up my volleyball shoes before a Thursday practice feeling dragged down by the workload of my day. At that point, all I had craved was the comfort of my own home. Yet, my work was not over.

The locker room echoed with silence—almost all-consuming. That silence, however, was quickly broken by Selena Gomez belting out her new song; one that allowed herself to surrender to her many listeners.

Gomez’s new single, Lose You To Love Me, has authentic and genuine written all over it. It is no surprise that her new anthem has climbed its way to number one on the Global Youtube Music Videos Chart.

“I needed to lose you to find me.”

Bold. Raw. Emotional. All of these words, and many more, come to mind when hearing Gomez’s first few words. The lyrics drew me in like a warm, fuzzy blanket during a cold winter storm.

“I needed to lose you to love me.”

She wasn’t just singing meaningless lyrics; she was painting a story relatable to all who cared to listen. A story filled with ache and emotion. A story that was real.

She wasn’t just singing meaningless lyrics; she was painting a story relatable to all who cared to listen.

This song wasn’t just another tale of heartbreak. She was sharing her experiences about letting go of people who weren’t good for her. She was learning about valuing herself and her ideals.

In today’s society, people are struggling more than ever with self-esteem; it’s no secret that Gomez herself was struggling with it. People, myself included, fall into the lies society speaks into our lives all too frequently.

The whole song is a testimony, one that shows how she got through a very difficult and ugly time in her life. It was her way of saying “This is where I was, but this is where I am now, and I’m okay.”

The whole message is assuring whoever listens that they will get past whatever it is that is holding them back. Each line is full of emotion—raw emotion. These are the emotions Gomez went through and struggled with.

Gomez completely unveiled herself. She told a story. She was vulnerable to millions and millions of people. That is what makes a true artist.
