My playlist on Spotify is over twelve hours long and filled with well over two hundred songs. But three of those songs I play on repeat. “Prom dress,” “fever dream,” and “i feel like chet” by artist mxmtoon are some of my favorite songs out of my whole entire playlist because they make me feel like I’m living inside of a dream.
Something about these three songs, either the way the songs are so relateable or the distinct vocals of mxmtoon, makes me want to dance for hours in my room. But, I only know three of mxmtoon’s songs by heart; I somehow only know three of mxmtoon’s songs despite her expansive albums.
I love every song I hear by mxmtoon, so why wouldn’t I listen to more of her music if I fell in love with the songs I already knew? I found myself asking this question just a few days ago. Maybe it’s because I’m scared I won’t like the other songs as much, or maybe it’s because there is so much music to listen to. I decided to give her newest album dawn a try.
The first song on the album, “fever dream,” is my favorite of any of her songs and definitely one of my tops songs overall; I really enjoyed reminiscing all the memories I have while this song was playing in the my subconscious’s background. “Fever dream” has a beautiful message about not worrying and just letting life go on because we need to take our time and enjoy what’s laid out in front of us.
Unlike “fever dream,” the next song, “used to you,” was completely unfamiliar. My favorite thing about these songs is that each has a powerful message, and it’s usually very obvious what it is. You don’t have to interpret every lyric, and I think that that isn’t very common in today’s style of music, so I really enjoy just being able to relax and understand the message the song is trying to put across.
“Used to you” was so relatable; it truly amazes me how this song about a broad topic was still something I found myself relating to with every lyric that was sung. I added this song to my playlist right along with the others.
“Lessons” was the next song in the album, and I really enjoyed how it felt like I was living in a movie while listening to this song; something about that vibe makes me so happy, and all of my favorite songs have this similar flow and rhythm, but, at the same time, this song felt completely unique to this album.
After listening to the whole album, I was so fulfilled and ecstatic that these new songs lived up to my expectations, and, after listening to each song, I’m grateful that I took a chance and took the time to listen. I already can’t wait for the next album, and I know mxmtoon will meet and even surpass expectations once again.
