Thursday night, the varsity volleyball team took on the Lowell Red Arrows in what would be one of the toughest games of their season. The Red Arrows are currently ranked as the top team in the state of Michigan, and the Rangers were able to hold on for a while; however, the ended up dropping the game in four sets 3-1.
The Rangers started off strong and picked up a win to start the game, concluding the first set with a score of 25-23. However, after that, the Red Arrows pulled away in the second, clinching a win just barely with a score of 25-22. Once again in the third, Lowell finished on top 25-14. Then, in the fourth and final set, the Red Arrows won 25-23. Despite the loss for the Rangers, they were still able to keep the scores close for the majority of the match.
There were several Rangers whose performances really stood out, including junior Sophie Shields. Sophie was stellar on both the offensive and defensive side of the game, picking up eight offensive kills and eleven defensive digs. Alongside her was sophomore Sarah Dunn, who led the team in digs, picking up 18 total. Sarah also managed to have nine offensive kills throughout the night as well. Senior Tatum Otolski led the team in kills, managing 17 total, and she was followed closely by junior Brooklyn Conner, who had eleven.
The Rangers are now holding an overall record of 2-1 for the season and a 1-1 conference record. They will play again next Thursday, September 24 against the two-time defending Division 2 state champion Grand Rapids Christian Eagles. The game will begin at 6:00 pm and will be played on the Rangers’ home court. This will be yet another huge OK White Conference game, and with the Eagles being a new addition to the conference, it will be a big game.
