In such strange times, at least we still have high school sports. The girls JV volleyball team faced off against Byron Center in a game that would decide the fate of the OK White Conference. The Rangers were 6-1 on the season and were looking for a big win to have a good chance to win the conference title.

In the first set, the girls were ready for the storm that awaited them. They came out early with great plays made by sophomore Averie Zaschak. Sophomore Brooke Kushak also made a huge play for the Rangers which led to a point extending their lead early. Wayland would make a run late in the set bringing the score very close with the Rangers leading by 4. The Rangers would be saved by Averie Zaschak’s long service run which would help the Rangers win the set 25-20.

In the second set, the girls had a chance to put a nail in the coffin. They would keep it very close early with great plays from sophomores Ally Werkema, Emma Costello, and Kate Hotaling. The strong defense of the Rangers would make this set very interesting in a close game that could have gone either way. Unfortunately for FHC, Byron pulled it out and won by a score of 25-20.

The final set of the season, everything on the line, first to 15 wins. The girls had worked all year for this and were determined not to lose the game. Kate came out hot right out of the gate with a killer serve streak that put the Rangers up early. Finally, Averie would finish off the Bulldogs and the Rangers would go on to win the game by a score of 15-10.

The girls are now 7-1 on the seasons and remain at the top of the OK White Conference. They play Wayland Union this Thursday in a non-conference showdown.
