Greenhouse Weekly Blogs- Season 1
This year, The Central Trend is proud to host weekly updates on FHC's greenhouse. Come back every week to read blogs from all the senior girls working hard on the greenhouse!
Greenhouse Week 1 (Sept 3-7)
2nd hour (Susannah Bennett) This week was all about creating a baseline for the rest of the year, in terms of setting up and preparing for the planting we're doing in the upcoming weeks. Earlier on in the week, we all picked the row we'd be working with during the year and spent time tidying it up (smoothing soil, weeding, and setting up the irrigation). The rest of the week was generally spent in ...
Greenhouse Week 2 (Sept. 10-14)
2nd hour (Susannah Bennett) Although I didn't actually spend much time in the greenhouse itself, I actually had a lot of fun doing little tasks for it from inside the school. We were assigned temporary roles this week, and my role was to water the flats of seeds and plants, both upstairs and downstairs. It seemed a bit time-consuming; however, as the week progressed, I became more efficient at it...
Greenhouse Week 3 (Sept. 17-21)
2nd hour (Susannah Bennett) The past week in the greenhouse was so much fun and the most exciting one so far! We started transplanting the sprouts that were inside into the greenhouse, and it was interesting to strategically be planting them in the boxes. Each different type of plant needs a certain amount of water and space, so figuring all of that out while planting was new for me. We also made...
Greenhouse Week 4 (Sept. 24-28)
Susannah Bennett: A lot more planting was done this week, and it was exciting to watch as more and more rows got filled with sprouts and seeds. I have an exceptional affinity to kohlrabi, as mentioned in an earlier entry, so watching the progression of it from seed to sprout inside and then transplanting it outside was memorable. To ensure that each cell (from the flats) would be fully transfer...
Greenhouse Week 5 (Oct 1-5)
Susannah Bennett: The more time I spend in the greenhouse, the more I love this opportunity that the other independent study students and I have. My time in the greenhouse, although limited, was wonderful, as cooler temperatures made it easier to work there. Besides the usual water of upstairs and downstairs flats, I did some planting throughout the week. I finished planting the last half of the fl...
Greenhouse Week 6 (Oct 8-12)
Susannah Bennett: With this new week came new tasks and new subjects of interest. Rather than fulfilling the usual chore of seeding, transplanting, and watering on repeat, my week was filled with supplementary tasks of creative and engineering nature, which was a welcome change. The first row of the greenhouse, which is my row, consists of only snap peas, and uniquely from other plants in the greenhou...
Greenhouse Week 7 (Oct. 15-20)
Susannah Bennett: More than my usual watering, this week I had the opportunity to run the irrigating system in the greenhouse. In theory, it’s seemingly a complicated process to coordinate, but because of the amount of work done ahead of time, it was practically seamless. One complication was the minor flooding in the aisles between the rows of the greenhouse due to the water being absorbed, ...
Greenhouse Week 8 (Oct. 22-26)
Susannah Bennett: While most of the other students had busy weeks, I had a relatively calm schedule in the greenhouse. Between tackling the irrigation system inside the greenhouse and managing other watering of the plants, I have begun to fall into a rhythm with my work. Because the watering inside the greenhouse was new to me, I ran into a couple of problems of my own making, but none were too extreme....
Greenhouse Week 9 (Oct 29-Nov 2)
Susannah Bennett At this point in the year, I've begun to fall into the rhythm of working in the greenhouse. A typical hour for me this week included the usual watering inside the greenhouse, running the system for 40 minutes, which is how long it takes for the system to run to completion. Other than the occasional open pipe that starts spraying water everywhere, the process is relatively smoot...
Greenhouse Week 11 (Nov 12-16)
Greenhouse Week 12 (Nov 26-30)
Susannah Bennett: “I fell in love with the concept of using the space that we have for something more practical.” Powered by her love for plants and food, edible landscaper Brie Arthur has made it her life’s work to produce for her community and to inspire her fellow gardeners with her unorthodox methods. Combining ornamentals with classic garden vegetables, Arthur’s idea is that lands...
Greenhouse Week 13 (Dec 3-7)
Susannah Bennett: This week proved to be a fairly average week for most, but for me, delivering greens and other vegetables from the greenhouse every day is always exciting. It's incredible that we continually keep growing produce to sell and give away to the FHC community, mainly staff at the high school. Especially while the E. coli outbreak on lettuce was prevalent, having lettuce from the gre...
