Improv Q&A: Russell Baird
Name: Russell Baird
Grade: 11th
1. How did you get into improv? Why did you decide to try out?
“I got into it by doing other theater programs like the play, and I signed up because it looked super fun.”
2. What is your favorite improv game? Give us an example.
“I personally like all the pun games. Possibly the best is SVU, [the game] where one person lies down and pretends to be dead, and [then] we take turns making cheesy daytime cop TV show lines. Like if the category was food, you could say ‘I guess he was ready to meat his maker.'”
3. Tell me a story. Any story! Significant or not.
“We were playing a basic game called Four Square where four groups of two each rotate through scenes. With the prompt of ‘zebra’, a certain team member dropped to all fours immediately and screamed ‘DON’T SHOOT’ at the top of their lungs. In the middle of the afternoon. At Cascade Park.”
4. What US landmark speaks to your soul?
“The Washington Monument because I’d love to be so great that when I die people make a giant stick that has nothing to do with my accomplishments in my honor.”
5. What’s your Culver’s order?
“Chicken sandwich with tomatoes, lettuce, and onions”
6. Give us your best car salesman pitch for improv,
“This bad boy can fit so many jokes in it.”
