FHC Inspires 2023 Q&As: Ashley Hibma

Position: Speaker

Title: “Positive Perception through Celiac Disease”

Why did you apply to be a speaker?

“I applied because I wanted to share my story about Celiac Disease and the lessons I learned from it.”

How are you feeling about speaking at FHC Inspires?

“I’m incredibly nervous, but I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

What was the process of perfecting your speech?

“Lots of continuous practice as well as taking tips from [Ken] George and using them in my presentation.”

What does your message mean to you, and what should it mean to the audience?

“My message shows what I went through when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which completely flipped my life around. I hope to show the impact it had on me and how finding the good in a bad situation can positively change everyone’s life.”

Did you ever see yourself speaking at FHC Inspires?

“A little bit. It took a lot of thought for me to decide if I actually wanted to do it or not. I decided to go for it, and I’m happy I chose to take this opportunity.”

Does your Google slide presentation reflect your topic?

“Not a ton. Besides the words on the slides, the images don’t add to my TED Talk much. I designed it so that the words hold the real power, not the images.”

What’s the best time of day and why?

“6 p.m. to dusk when the sun is setting, and I get to socialize and eat food. I love to eat dinner with my family. I’m also a night owl, so I enjoy knowing that I’ll be up for a while still.”

What’s something you can’t live without?

“My phone because I need to be able to contact someone if I need them. If I couldn’t contact someone immediately when I need them, I would be very anxious.”
