Why did you choose Saginaw Valley as your final destination?
I picked Saginaw Valley because I’ve always wanted to go there. I’ve been to multiple camps and I felt like I had a good connection with the coaches there, but most of all, I like what they stand for and what they’re trying to establish: a family. As we all know, family is the most important thing in the world, that is the main goal for their players so that’s why I picked them.
What was the turning point that made you want to play football in college?
I think it was my sophomore year after my JV season ended, I got pulled up to varsity, at the time I played for Midland Dow. It was my official fist varsity practice: I took a handoff, made to cut and dib to the outside, and I thought I was free, but out of nowhere the inside LB completely demolished me. In that moment, I learned a lesson from that hit: life will knock you down but you have to get right back up and keep going because around that time in my life, football was my way out, so that’s when I decided I wanted to play college football.
What is your favorite moment from football career?
I would say beating Lowell for sure.
What is your biggest goal once you get to Saginaw Valley?
My plan is to work hard every day and to take advantage of every opportunity I get.
Describe your journey from early football experiences to now.
The only thing that I would say about these past experiences between my old school and current school is that the conference was different here; the conference has very good, competitive teams. Therefore, it’s giving me the experience that I need to in order to play at a high level or at the college level.
Winterfest Court Q&As: Sophie Kovacevich
How do you feel about being on Winterfest court?
“I’m super excited. I’m really excited to show off our lip sync. We’ve been working really hard. Everybody’s been super nice and I’m just really happy with everything.”
What was your reaction to the announcement?
“I was kind of shocked because I wasn’t really expecting it. I was really happy about it though.”
How will Winterfest night play out for you?
“We’re gonna start off the night by getting ready with my friends. We’re going to go over to her house, and then we’re going to pictures down in Grand Rapids, and we did something different this year. Instead of going out to dinner, we had dinner catered to us. We’re [going] back to my friend’s house, and we’re keeping it pretty low-key, nothing too fancy, and then we’ll go to the dance and hang out for the rest of the night.”
Who do you think should have been nominated?
“I think everybody up there deserved to be nominated. That’s what I had in my mind because everybody up there is super friendly, super nice, and I think they deserve that.”
Explain why people should vote for you as queen?
“I don’t really know exactly why, but I’m pretty friendly. I’d say to other people it’d be a cool experience, but vote for whoever you want.”
What is your favorite senior year memory?
“When we went to Ford Field for football, that was really exciting because I got to cheer there and it was so fun. [We] stunted in the stands and [got to] see everybody, and it was such an out-of-world experience.”
Would you ever go skydiving?
“No, [definitely not].”
