American Horror Story: Is It Worth the Terror?

December 1, 2015

I felt obligated and curiosity to watch American Horror Story, since throughout my social media there were people talking about the show. It got to the point where I could no longer be left out of the loop and had to begin watching. I logged into Netflix and dove in; and boy, was I in for it. At first I thought the show would be kinda like a horror movie that is constructed into a show. I was right at first clips, the show delayed and elongated the event to fit the form of a series. However, the show maintains to contained few surprises and hiccups for the main characters influencing my excitement.

The series consisted of a family of a father, mother, and a teenaged daughter as they moved across the country and into a home that had some dramatic history behind it. The house was built in the 1920’s and throughout the years of still standing up, has endured some gruesome, horrific deaths. As time goes on and the family continues to reside there deaths continue to a occur.

The characters are not really explained or shown as to what or who they are until a few episodes in. It is a lot going at once and overwhelmed me very much. The beginning of the show was a struggle for me, there were a lot of people randomly pop up, but there was no content to them. The problem I see with this is that with not inducting some of the people right away, will lead to the viewer’s confusion causing them to desert the series.

The graphics within the show are very detailed and gruesome, I learned as the further I went into the show the more visual it got. At some points within the show, I had to pause the episode and turn on my lights from fright. I usually am not a fan of horror shows or movies, but surprisingly I continued to watch the show and enjoyed looking forward to the next episode. I noticed the series managed to have the continuum of cliff hanger keeping my interest.

The deeper I got into the show, the more and more intended it became. However, as the ending episode held my interest, the intensity reached a climax and it plumbed into nothing, and complete disappointment filled me. The ending was completely bogus, it makes me feel as if I just wasted my entire day watching the series end with a crappy ending. It was almost as if the end was rushed everything and thrown into one episode.

However, I for some reason continued watching the show into the second season, don’t know why, but I did and upon truth instigation of the show I found more confusion. I learned that every new season the scenario changes and so do the characters, but the actors do not. So for season one the scenario was murder house, two was the asylum, three was coven, etc. I did not know this ahead of time so when the second season started with a completely different plot and characters, I was really frustrated as to what is happening. I greatly think my knowledge of this beforehand would vastly improve my opinion of the show.

This is a series that miss a second of one’s attention, every second something major event happens. It was too much for me, the gruesome images, the fast pace of the show. But the biggest bummer for me way the change in scenario every season, I tend to get attached to the characters and to see the end, kinda sucks at the end of the first season.

Overall, American Horror Story is a great show only if one is really into horror and enjoys a lot going at once. However, if one is terrified if these types of topics, I definitely recommend to stay clear of the show.
