Name: Maya Fitzgerald
TED Talk Title: Dream big, plan small
Why did you apply to be a speaker?
“I applied to be a speaker at FHC Inspires because I wanted to prove something. I wanted to prove to myself and others that I could do anything that I want to do in life. I am terrified of public speaking and I wanted to get over my fear with bold action. I also would like to inspire a life or change how someone goes about their goals and life. I just thought it was a really cool opportunity that I should take on!”
How are you feeling about speaking at FHC Inspires?
“I am definitely feeling scared and nervous for the night, but I am also super excited. This is an amazing opportunity that I am beyond grateful to have. I will probably get more nervous as the date gets closer.”
What was the process of picking the perfect TED Talk topic?
“I actually had to switch my entire TED Talk because I overlapped with a couple of other people’s topics. It is not an easy process, but you just have to find the one you like the most. You pick a topic that you can relate to and talk passionately about, while also picking one that others can relate to and maybe learn something from.”
What does your message mean to you?
“My TED Talk means a lot to me as a whole. It is my story about the sport that has taught me so much about life. It feels amazing to share my story with others and impact them through it.”
Who is your target audience?
“I don’t really know if I have a specific target audience, because my topic can really relate to anyone who listens. I would love to change anyone’s life who wants to listen and take my advice.”
Did you ever see yourself speaking at FHC Inspires?
“To be honest, when [Honors English 10 teacher Ken] George first talked about FHC Inspires I was against it. I highly dislike public speaking and the thought of it makes my stomach hurt. But after I gave my TED Talk in class I thought it was fun and would enjoy doing it in front of a bigger audience, so now I am here, ready to give an inspiring TED Talk.”
What are you doing to prepare for the big night?
“I don’t think I have any specific things I will do to get ready for the show, other than just practicing my TED Talk a million times. I will practice, be ready and just go for it!”
How does your Google Slides presentation reflect your topic?
“My Google Slides presentation is mostly pictures of myself, to show my story and be relatable. I talk about my golf journey and how it has taught me to dream small, so my presentation is a lot of pictures of me and my life.”
What’s a mobile game you’re currently hooked on?
“I don’t really play games on my phone, but I do the normal Instagram, Snapchat, and Youtube.”
