Why did you decide to direct the play this year?

I’ve always been in support of the program— through Improv Central and Random Acts of Talent—so it kind of seemed inevitable!

What has been your favorite part of directing The Crucible so far?

I’m just so in love with Arthur Miller’s play. The characters are just so dynamic, and their message has always seemed important. It’s been really, really fun watching students bring this play to life and learn to love it just as much as I do.

What has been the most challenging part?

Ask any director, there are just SO many moving parts in any production: costumes, lights, sounds, characterization, movement, set building, etc. It’s been incredibly hard to keep it all straight. Not to mention, sometimes it’s hard to motivate students; I want them to understand that every piece of the puzzle is equally important, and sometimes I think they forget that. The leads, understandably so, get lots of recognition, but they are just as important as someone painting the set or someone whose main job is to react on stage to the scene at hand.

What has surprised you most so far about directing?

It’s a lot of bone-tiring work (you’ll know what I mean when you get there), but it’s just as fun as I remember theatre being when I was in high school.

What are you looking forward to about the performances?

I love watching the crew and actors take their final bow. Their faces just light up when they get to see the reward for all of their hard work!

Why should people come to the play?

It’s entertaining and timeless.

What is your hidden talent?

I was that kid in elementary school who could burp the ABCs…and I probably still could.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

Metaphorically, coffee; literally, eucalyptus-scented bath water.

What is your favorite color?

Blue

What is your role in crew?

I guess at face value, I’m in charge of everyone. In reality, I help [the cast and crew] through the production process more than just bossing them around. So I help them with lines and things like spacing on stage. I also just provide guidance whenever they have questions, and Mrs. Beckett can’t help.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

Literally anywhere backstage. I’ll be running around trying to figure out all the last-minute things.

How long have you been in theater?

I’ve been doing it since freshman year.

What is your favorite part of productions?

I just really like being around all the people. It’s a really fun group to have to be around so much; a lot of them are my friends, and I’ve met a lot of my friends through theater as well.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

I don’t think the show itself is too different, but I have more responsibility this year than I ever have before, so it feels a lot different.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

It gives you so much more of a view of everything that goes on. When you join crew, you come [to rehearsal] in the last two weeks of production, but there’s so much more that happens beforehand.

What is your hidden talent?

I don’t really have very much free time to have a hidden talent.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

Chocolate; it might be kind of gross, but it sounds delicious.

What is your favorite color?

Pink or navy blue

What is your role in crew?

When the show is coming up, I help make the program and do all of the organizing stuff. I hang up the posters and help advertise.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

Before the shows, I usually go into the lobby and I grab everyone’s little presents that people buy them, like flowers, and I get to take those to the cast members. It’s really cute. I also help fill up everyone’s water bottles.

How long have you been in theater?

Since the play in my freshman year, so three years.

What is your favorite part of productions?

My favorite part is the community. I really like being able to hang out with everyone after the shows, like when we go out to eat or have our cast party after the shows.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

It’s similar to my freshman year, where there aren’t too many sets, so we won’t be doing too much during the shows because there are only two or three different sets to change.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

My position is mostly busy work, but I like doing busy work because it’s just something to spend time doing, and I love the people I do it with. It’s also a lot of talking to everyone, so you get to be closer to every cast and crew member.

What is your hidden talent?

I’m pretty good at singing.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

I’m gonna go with rubber ducks.

What is your favorite color?

Yellow

What is your role in crew?

I design, build, and paint all of the sets that you see during the show.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

I don’t do anything specific for my job right before a show, but just trying to help wherever I can. I make sure everything on the set is right and that nothing is broken.

How long have you been in theater?

I’ve been in theater since my freshman year.

What is your favorite part of productions?

Getting to be a part of what happens behind the scenes, and doing it with all of my friends. I think it’s such an interesting position, and not many people get to experience what goes on backstage.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

It’s a lot less light-hearted than what we’re used to. It really shows a different side of the actors, because it’s not as comedic.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

What we do is a lot different than other people in theater, even from other people in crew. It’s very rewarding to be such a big part of what you see.

What is your hidden talent?

I’m fairly decent at painting.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

Ducks

What is your role in crew?

I work with the director and the student director to figure out how each character should look individually, and then I go out and collect all the wigs, makeup, and supplies to make them look as good as they can

Where are you typically found right before shows?

I basically am running around making sure everything is working properly. I usually do the leads’ makeup and wigs, and I’m running around making sure everyone is looking good.

How long have you been in theater?

This will be my fourth year in theater and my third year as crew head.

What is your favorite part of productions?

Being with all of my friends and being part of a community as great as this. Theater has brought me closer to a lot of my friends.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

The Crucible is a lot gloomier and sadder than our other shows. There’s also less makeup needed than for most of our other shows, which has been partly a relief and also sort of sad because it is my senior year, and it would have been fun to have a big makeup show.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

It’s a great way to express your creativity. You get so much freedom to mess around and see what’s going to work with everyone.

What is your hidden talent?

I’m good at thinking on the fly and thinking outside the box. I’m really good at working under pressure.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

If I could drink it, RedBull, the pink edition.

What is your favorite color?

I have two: my favorite color in general is orange, but I like to wear green.

What is your role in crew?

I manage the costume crew in general, so that means learning quick changes and whatnot. I also have a big say in what the costumes that people wear are and what needs to get done overall with costuming.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

I’m usually found at a fast-food restaurant. Where there’s food, you’ll find me.

How long have you been in theater?

I started the winter of my freshman year, so that’s six semesters now.

What is your favorite part of productions?

Closing night, everyone comes together to get everything done, and then we get to go to the after-party together.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

My first show was Alice in Wonderland, and The Crucible has been a lot harder to costume than that because we’ve had to focus on a lot more on being time-period accurate.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

You’re in constant contact with almost everyone, so you really get to know the cast and crew. Overall, it’s a great position to have if you’re super social.

What is your hidden talent?

I’m surprisingly good at hand sewing under pressure.

If you could jump into a pool of anything, what would it be?

Definitely rubber ducks, they’d be super satisfying to swim around in.

What is your favorite color?

Purple

What is your role in crew?

Essentially, we organize and maintain almost all items that the actors are on stage with, and we also do some of the decorating.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

Normally, I would just be backstage or in the scene shop. I could also be setting up a scene because we’re in charge of the visual organization of everything.

How long have you been in theater?

I joined my freshman year, so this is my third year doing it.

What is your favorite part of productions?

I really love the feeling backstage, because everyone is always so welcoming and excited, and it’s just a great community to be around.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

This show is definitely one of the older ones that we’ve done. There are lots of different things that we have to find for the set and props. Things are also said differently and done differently.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

It’s definitely a fun way to interact with a lot of people, and it’s kind of an easy way to have a position in theater and a role in productions without being on stage.

What is your hidden talent?

I’m really good at climbing shelves.

What is your role in crew?

I run mics and I make sure that the lights are running smoothly. During the shows, most of the time I’m just making sure everybody can be heard and that all the mics don’t sound terrible.

Where are you typically found right before shows?

Hooking up mics. It actually takes a really long time, so that’s normally where I can be found.

How long have you been in theater?

Since the fall show my freshman year.

What is your favorite part of productions?

I like getting to meet all the new actors. I like getting to make sure that everything is working smoothly, and I like making sure that everyone in my section is doing well.

How is The Crucible different than other shows you’ve been a part of?

There’s a lot of yelling and screaming. I have to make sure that the yelling doesn’t break any of the mics.

Why would you recommend your position to new people? 

If you’re nervous about being on stage, it offers you a way to help all the actors and makes sure you’re still really close in the theater community without having to be the center of attention.

What is your hidden talent?

I can play the bass and guitar; that’s not super hidden, though.
