Is it crazy to be able to love something that’s never spoken? In my opinion, love goes beyond words. It comes from one’s actions, not one’s mouth. Luna, Lucy, and Ruby all came into my life at the most perfect times. They have never spoken a word to me, yet I understand them as deeply as they understand me. I don’t like to refer to them as pets, more as friends. Ruby is the oldest of the three; when I was just a baby, she was just a kitten. Then Lucy came years later, earning her place in the family as a young puppy. Finally, Luna came around, and she was a COVID puppy. These animals have changed my life in many ways, and I appreciate them as well as the ones who came before them and the ones who will come after them. They are not only my friends but also my family.
I remember when I was learning my first words, Ruby came into our home as a baby with just as much knowledge of the world as I had. She has been with me for 13 years, and she is still going strong. She may not be the young, active, and silly cat she had been ten years ago, but she is still here, and that’s all I can ask for. Over the past few years, I’ve begun to really bond with Ruby in various ways. She sleeps in my room every night, and whenever I’m not at school or somewhere besides home, I’m with Ruby. She is so full of love, but she doesn’t show many people that, even within our family. That makes our bond special because she does not just love anybody; she chooses, and she chose me. Ruby is my best friend, the first thing I see when I wake up and the last thing I see before I go to sleep. She isn’t just any cat. She’s my best friend.
Lucy is a dog I will never fully understand. She can be weird, mental, and crazy, but also so sweet. When we first got her, it was just a little bit after we had lost my childhood dog, Charlotte. Charlotte was another animal that had been with me practically since birth, but I lost her. Lucy came about a year later, filling a void within my family with her old soul and the biggest heart. Lucy was cute, fun, and just a whole new beginning. Lucy cares about her family as we care about her. Her little paws tap on the house’s floors, and her little nose sniffs out where the treats are hiding in the pantry. Every day I spend with her, I spend it like it’s our last. She is getting older and older every day, and my time with her is slowly beginning to run out, so I cherish every moment I have with her. She will always be just as young as she was when we brought her home in 2018. She will always be my baby.
During quarantine, what else can you do besides get a new dog? Luna became a member of the family in 2020, right before Christmas. We brought her home as a little puppy, the cutest one I had ever seen. I immediately fell in love with her playful personality and her adorable little puppy face. She was the light in the darkness during the COVID era. She lifted everyone’s spirits, and her presence was like a ball of sunshine. Even once she grew out of her puppy phase, she remained the same dog we brought home that day. She is now four years old, and I could not imagine a life without her. She is the most loving dog, with some interesting behaviors. Words can not describe the love I have for Luna; she is the highlight at the end of my day when I get home from school. She is always at the door, waiting for me. Luna makes everyone feel so loved, and for that, I will always be grateful that my parents decided one random evening that we needed two dogs.
Luna, Lucy, and Ruby all have big personalities. It just takes a little while to see them. They are the light of my life, and life without them is truly unimaginable. I don’t know how I would survive without Luna’s silliness, Lucy’s cuddles, and Ruby’s unique way of showing her love for me. These animals are more than just pets; they are my entire world. I will always appreciate them now and not take any moment for granted, because even though they are only there for a segment of my life, I am there for their entire life.
