As holiday break finally arrives, students can lift a load off their shoulders as packets of homework and exams are wrapping up for the semester. Now that the stress of school is not taking up everyone’s time, it is important to make the most of the winter hiatus; one way that this could be done is to organize a gift exchange with friends or family. Although you don’t experience the traditional cheer of presents under the tree, there are many fun ways to buy gifts for everyone important in your life without spending a ton of money.
As someone who considers themselves a thoughtful gift-giver, here are some gift-exchange ideas to bring holiday cheer to your friend group or family gatherings.
White Elephant
While the name might be confusing, white elephant is not an exchange of enormous mammals being passed around the Christmas tree. Instead, it is a trade of silly, impractical gifts that make the time with friends even more enjoyable. Participants bring a wrapped gift, which is often humorous and inexpensive, and then take turns either choosing a new present from the pile of gifts or “stealing” a present that someone has already unwrapped. Because it is highly coveted and the hilarious gifts can change hands several times, the game creates friendly competition and lots of memorable moments. Most of the funnier gifts are actually found around the house or in a Five Below’s toy section. There is no need to spend heaps of money on a silly exchange with loved ones.
Secret Santa
Secret Santa is one of the most cherished holiday gift-exchange traditions among the people in my life. Instead of selecting gifts openly, each participant is randomly assigned to a person to shop for, keeping their identity a secret until the exchange takes place. This element of anonymity creates a sense of anticipation as everyone tries to figure out who they might be receiving their presents from. What makes Secret Santa especially meaningful is the intention behind the gift. The players often take time to choose something that reflects the recipient’s personality, which is similar to a typical gift exchange. Because the spending limit isn’t usually very high, Secret Santa is not about expensive gifts; instead, it is more about being creative and paying attention to what someone might actually adore. It gives everyone a chance to think about each other in a meaningful way, which makes the exchange feel even more personalized.
Whole group mini swap
When scrolling through my TikTok For You page recently, a new style of gift exchange instantly grabbed my attention. The video showcased a friend group trading an assortment of mini gifts so that everyone walked away with the exact same items. Traditional exchanges can sometimes leave one person with a noticeably more valuable item than another, but the whole group mini swap eliminates that imbalance entirely. Everyone receives something equal in worth, which makes the experience feel thoughtful and fair. The concept centers on selecting practical gifts for everyone, which could be a travel-sized makeup product from Sephora or something as inexpensive as hair ties.
Now that the winter hiatus is approaching, I hope that these three gift exchanges make the holiday season feel just a little more cheery.
