With May fast approaching and the seniors’ school year coming to a close, senior Ford Fauson is looking forward to enjoying his last summer in his childhood hometown. While wanting to spend time at home, he also hopes to set aside some of his time to be able to travel with his family.
“With college football, that might take up a good chunk of time in the summer,” Ford said. “So at the start, I’m hoping to get back out to Europe again, which would be fun to go on a few trips with my family.”
Part of Ford’s summer will be spent training for his upcoming football season at Ithaca College. At Ithaca, he will be studying sports media and participating in many broadcasting opportunities. Coming from being a three-sport high-school athlete, he is glad to have these to keep him busy. He enjoys having a lot to do and not feeling bored. Focusing on football, though, does leave behind his other two high school sports.
“I’ll definitely miss basketball,” Ford said, “because I’ve been playing it since I was four, and I’ve just had such a love for the game, and I always love watching [basketball].”
Ford’s last season of basketball just wrapped up, with the team trying to finish the season strong and also just enjoy the last parts of it all. Ford finished his season on a high note, enjoying playing with the kids he grew up with and making a mark on the court. Although he’ll miss the sport, he is excited to move on and head into his college football career.
“[The basketball season] had been a lot of fun,” Ford said, “because I’ve been playing with guys I’ve been playing basketball with since I was in elementary school, so that’s been really fun.”
Not only is he going to miss basketball, but also his spring sport: crew. He started rowing in his freshman year after his dad, who rowed in college, introduced him to it. His sister also rowed at the time and is now doing it at the college level. Both family members have had a lasting impact on Ford and the sport. The tight-knit community of crew has brought Ford many new friends and memories that he will hold onto for years to come.
“We do [have a close group on the crew team],” Ford said, “It doesn’t matter the grade either. Everyone gets along very well.”
Ford’s last season of football may have brought some challenges, but it was ultimately a great way to round out his high school career and move on to the next level: college. Unfortunately, the team’s season finished with a rocky record of 2-7, but throughout the challenge of the season, Ford and his team kept working and, in the end, he had fun with the team.
“[It was] a little [bit of a] rough year,” Ford said. “But, you know, it was a pretty young team. So, what can you do about that? Not a lot of ‘total experience,’ but it was so fun getting out there with my friends and playing the sport [that] I love.”
Ford’s last year at FHC has been filled with fun experiences and memories through sports and classes. Although it is all coming to a bittersweet end, he is making the most of it all—filling his schedule with all of his favorite sports and having time to hang out with friends and family.
“[I’ve] just had a fun time with sports so far, with football and basketball,” Ford said, “[and] really just coming together with my classmates and friends, and just trying to make the most of my last year [at FHC].”
