The Underrated Sports Bar of Grand Rapids

To be honest, we weren’t even supposed to go there that night. We wanted Buffalo Wild Wings, but the wait was so long that we decided to improvise. Two of my friends were totally against the idea, but the other three of us won the majority vote and dragged them inside the restaurant. However, I’m glad we beat them out, because checking out the seriously underrated Applebee’s on East Beltline was worth the trip out.

After being seated very quickly and politely, we opened our menus and perused them, trying to find the best deal to satisfy our huge appetites. After watching two college football playoffs and beginning our third, my friends and I needed some solid food to tide us over. Deciding upon the 2 for $20 deal, where two people can order an appetizer to share along with two entree meals for $20, I ordered a plate of chicken tenders and fries while my friend got a pasta meal and we split some wings. While waiting for our food, I looked around at the ambience of the establishment.

At first glance, it seemed like a typical sports bar. The bar was surrounded by hightop tables and booths, but sectioned off from some other tables in a way that allowed for separation between excited fans and families looking for a quieter meal. The televisions located throughout the restaurant allowed patrons to view any game they wished, a convenience that my friends and I took advantage of. But what really set the place apart was the art on the walls. Photographs devoted to each surrounding high school lined the walls, and looking around you could almost certainly find your place. From Byron Center to Jenison to all three of the Forest Hills’, going in and seeing your alma mater or current school was a cool sight, and made us feel right at home.

The appetizers came very quickly, and the rest of our food not long after that. My chicken tenders and french fries were seasoned perfectly, and the wings I split with my friend were delicious as well. And although they were a bit on the spicy side for the mild order we placed, I have no tolerance to heat at all, so I know that someone who enjoys heat more than I do would have loved them. The price was another perk, since the 2 for $20 deal split between my friend and I made the entire meal only $10. For the amount of food we got, in addition to the quality of it all, it was a great deal I plan on taking advantage of again.

Overall, the Applebee’s on East Beltline is an underrated hangout to frequent. Hanging out in the easy atmosphere while eating their great food and watching the game with my friends felt incredibly natural, and brought about a very fun night. Along with their great prices, service, and overall vibe, Applebee’s is a choice everyone should consider for a night out with friends.
