Humans of FHC: Carolyn Mast

“I’m in a Venturing Crew, which is through Boy Scouts, [as] a co-ed program. It’s really fun. I got into it because my brother is an Eagle Scout, and he was like, ‘Hey, we have this thing happening.’ I was like, ‘Okay, we’ll go.’ And then we ended up connecting [with the program], and I joined a crew. We’ve done a couple of trips. We went backpacking in Indiana; we have a plan to go to Florida this summer to the Keys. We’re doing a weeklong trip there on one of the islands; it’s going to be cool. We’ve done a couple of other smaller things; we went rock climbing and all sorts of things. It’s a lot of fun, and we do a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t normally do if it was just me, and I’ve met a lot of new people. It’s definitely [been a learning experience] because there are so many things that I haven’t done before. [The crew’s] like, ‘Hey, we should do this,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know how to do that,’ and they’re like ‘We can teach you,’ or, ‘We’ll find somebody,’ or ‘We don’t know how to do this either.’ We’ve been camping, and I didn’t know how to use some of the backpacking stoves. They were like, ‘You need to learn how to do this, so you’re in charge tonight— this is how you do it.’ ”
