My writing journey wasn’t always smooth sailing

Jadelin Hinkel

One of the first stories I ever enjoyed writing and the best grade I’ve ever received on a writing assignment.

Never in a million years would I see myself writing just for fun. All my life I was a below-average student whenever it came to anything related to writing.

I never advanced when it came to writing; in fact, I could barely get above a D on any of my papers. I struggled for as long as I can remember. I would never be able to write a paper let alone stay on the same topic for hours at a time.

Writing was one of my least favorite things to ever do. Now I write whenever I’m stressed or want to just blow off some steam.

Grammar was one of my biggest struggles. Ever since I started writing, I would be stuck in a slower English class due to my inability to grasp the concepts of anything related to proper grammar.

I still struggle with the simplest sentences. One of the only reasons I can produce legible sentences is thanks to whoever reads my writing prior to making my final changes. Without them, I would’ve never been able to produce postable work.

I am able to think of my own topic to create a piece about, but when it comes to putting pen to paper, I struggle to just complete my thoughts. My work always consists of confusion, uncompleted sentences, and just illegible work.

All the teachers who had me before me joining The Central Trend had little to no faith in my writing capabilities—at one point, I didn’t even think I’d be able to write one complete story.

Thanks to my teacher last year who allowed us to write about whatever we wanted to when the pandemic first hit, I was able to see my full potential when it came to writing.

After seeing how much I enjoyed writing whatever I wanted, a friend suggested I tried Writing for Publication. They wanted to push me to see if I can pick up on some simple tricks to make my writing better.

I know my writing is far from perfection, but I strive to try my best with every story, even if it’s done hastily. I try to do the best I can without making common errors. But, I am only human. We all make common mistakes, but when it came to my writing, I had more than average.

Throughout my journey as a writer, I have grown to love divulging strangers in the stories of my life. Sharing some of the darkest parts of my life and seeing that some people actually enjoy hearing about what happens in my day-to-day life is rewarding.

But my stories would be nothing without my amazing editor; without them, I would have nothing to tell and no one to share my stories with.

So, I thank everyone who has pushed me and helped me discover and deepen my love for writing.
