FHC Inspires 2023 Q&As: Rowan Szpieg
Position: Speaker
TED Talk Title: Spoken Poetry
Why did you apply to be a speaker?
“I didn’t really want to do it at first, but, you know, I thought it was a cool opportunity to get to say something that I’m passionate about to so many people.”
How are you feeling about speaking at FHC Inspires?
“Last night, it went okay. I had a [few] mess-ups, but I humiliated myself to a point where I don’t think I’ll do it again.”
What was the process of perfecting your speech?
“Like anything, I don’t think it’s going to be perfected. I did it before, and we did our whole writing lesson in class, and here I am looking at it now, seeing all the ways that I can make it so much better.”
What does your message mean to you, and what should it mean to the audience?
“It means a lot to me because of the background behind it and, you know, there’s so much, misinformation out there about what it’s about.”
Does your Google slide presentation reflect your topic?
“Absolutely not, so. I put no effort into my slides. I don’t really care about them, I just care about sounding all right saying it.”
What’s the best time of day and why?
“Probably evening, just after dinner because I like to watch the sunset, and that’s when we usually have fires and watch movies in our family.”
What’s something you can’t live without?
“Any type of music. Music plays such a huge role in my life with de-stressing, playing it, and listening to it. I couldn’t live without that.”
