The other night I was sitting in my room and felt like I wanted to watch a Disney movie, so I decided to watch something on Disney Plus.
I opened Disney Plus and under the new releases category, I saw the movie, Peter Pan & Wendy. Even though there are quite a few movies and shows based on Peter Pan, the Darling family, Tinkerbell, and Captain Hook, I wanted to see if this one was more creative than the rest, so I decided to watch it despite it being nearly a year old.
It started off very chaotic; the two brothers, John and Michael, were pretending to be Peter Pan and a pirate running around through the house while sword fighting. I felt like it was kind of weird to just start a movie off that chaotic.
A few minutes into the movie, Peter Pan already shows up in the Darling kids’ room while they’re asleep. He’s with Tinkerbell, the fairy, and they’re chasing after his shadow. The Darling kids didn’t believe in Peter Pan. They thought he was just a bedtime story, so they were very confused as to why Peter Pan was running, or flying, around their bedroom.
Only a few minutes into the movie, I was already confused and tired of the plot. It felt like every other Peter Pan story, but also was just slightly different. While it is rated PG, I don’t see why a kid would enjoy watching it. It wasn’t as fun or exciting as I hoped it would be.
Once Peter, Tinkerbell, Wendy, John, and Michael arrive at Neverland, Captain Hook’s ship spots them. It shows Captain Hook and the crew on his ship trying to take them down, but they don’t manage to do that. The next few minutes were incredibly confusing, and I still don’t understand what happened. It cuts to Wendy, without Peter, Tinkerbell, or her family, on a cliff with the Lost Boys. A few minutes later, it cuts to John and Michael getting pulled into a boat by Captain Hook’s crew and then shows them locked up in a room. The whole thing doesn’t make sense.
Later, near the end of the movie, I think the writers wanted to add a huge plot twist, that felt incredibly random, just so whoever watches the movie wouldn’t be able to predict the ending. I thought it was going to end like every other Peter Pan movie does, but it was a weird plot twist. It kind of changed the entire course of the movie.
Even with the plot twist at the end, Peter Pan & Wendy didn’t feel worth watching. I got bored only a few minutes into the movie, and I found myself getting distracted easily. It felt like every other Peter Pan movie, even though it ended differently. For the most part, the story felt the same; there weren’t any new characters, and it was all just the same. I think it’s time for movie and showwriters to give up on the Peter Pan plot because there are plenty of movies surrounding it.
It wasn’t worth the watch because of how slow and boring it was and how chaotic it felt.
