I have always tried to go to as many concerts as possible. Seeing an artist I love performing live and being surrounded by other people who love them is so exhilarating. Plus, I’ll never miss a chance to put on a cute outfit and heeled boots.
However, I have never been super drawn to any of the opening acts I’ve seen. They are always fine; sometimes, I pull up a song they’re singing and add it to one of my many obscure playlists. But I’ve never become a die-hard fan of any opening act.
Until MaRynn Taylor.
Taylor is a Michigan native who moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music. She got to return to Michigan for the first show of KELSEA BALLERINI LIVE ON TOUR, which she is opening for during all 36 show dates.
Taylor opened the concert with original songs and performed a cover of “Fast Car” and “Since U Been Gone.” She has the gorgeous southern twang to her voice, and her lyrics are relatable. I immediately followed her Spotify account and added several of her songs to my Liked Songs playlist. I now know each and every one of her songs by heart and am a lifetime fan.
“Shakin’ In My Boots”
This is the ultimate country song. It has a fun beat that immediately makes me want to dance. It is about how a boy is making her want to dance because she is so happy with him. It has a country twang to it without being a cliche country song. Her voice is so unique and adds to the quality of the song. I have it in my Liked Songs playlist on Spotify, and every time it plays, I start to dance.
“Make You Mine”
Another love song by Taylor, this one is about how she wants the boy to make her want him. She doesn’t want him to just be there; she wants him to try. This song is not as upbeat as the one I talked about previously, but it still has a positive vibe to it. The beat of this song is more unique, and it truly shows off her vocal talent. The backup vocals in this song also aid in its catchiness, as the hint of a deeper voice brings out Taylor’s southern accent. This is one I will never skip.
“Same girl same”
When I saw Taylor in concert, this song was unreleased, and I pre-saved it immediately. I learned every word within 12 hours of it being released, and I often listen to it on repeat. That’s how good it is. The song is about an ex of Taylor’s, whom she saw at one of her shows with his new girlfriend. She is talking to the girlfriend, saying how everything that she is doing with her boyfriend is the exact same as it was when Taylor was dating him. This song has the most appealing lyrics that I truly relate to so much, and her voice is amazing, in all her songs, of course, but especially in this one.
“Get To Know Me”
This is probably the most melancholy of the songs Taylor played while opening for Ballerini, but that also makes it one of my favorites. The song talks about someone from her past, and how they randomly check in with her and ask how she’s doing, but she’s moved on from that relationship and doesn’t feel that they deserve to know about her anymore. This song is so relatable to anyone who has had any sort of relationship fall apart, and I love to play it while driving at night when I’m in my feels. Like the rest of her discography, the lyrics are catchy, and her voice shows perfect emotion.
“Season 2 of Friends”
My favorite show is Friends. I have seen it at least seven times, and I know every word to pretty much every episode. So, when Taylor announced that the next song she was going to be singing was about Friends, as that is also her favorite show, I already knew I would love it. The song talks about how she may feel like she is behind in life, but she is the same age that the characters were in Season 2 of Friends, and none of them have settled down yet, so she is truly doing okay. The song features the signature clap from the theme song of the show, making it immediately catchy, and has noteworthy lyrics that are constantly stuck in my head. This song was the first that I added to my Spotify playlists, and I don’t see myself taking it off anytime in the future.
Overall, I absolutely adore everything about MaRynn Taylor. Her songs are so incredible, she has such a sweet personality, and I will be fighting for tickets to see her in the future.
