Winterfest was Saturday, and as I stood in front of my closet yesterday, I realized I had nothing to wear—again. My friends and I have an inside joke we call “the homecoming dance incident.” On the night of senior Homecoming, everything that could go wrong went wrong, from being late to the dinner reservation to being charged an unexpected 60 dollars when my friend Audrey and I went to get our makeup done. I’ve never been to a Winterfest dance before, mainly because it never interested me to go to a dance at the start of cold February. However, when I decided to go this year, I had some unexpected surprises and new stories to tell.
I had the perfect dress in mind: white with black accessories to make the dress stand out. However, like usual, it took me until the last minute to decide to go and find a dress. On the night of February 6th, two days before the dance, my mother and I went hunting for a dress, any dress— since I was already last-minute shopping. We entered the mall, and after an hour of detours, looking at our favorite perfumes, smelling every one of them, and wandering and saying, “Just one more minute,” we finally saw a dress that happened to match exactly what I wanted.
Shoes are an essential part of a formal outfit. When I think of winter I think of white and blue, cold, and the need to be warm. I bought a pair of black heels to offset all the white I was going to be wearing, and with it a small black fur coat for warmth and an extra flair. Gems line the strap on the shoes to match the gems on my dress.
With the perfect dress picked out, I began thinking about my morning routine the day of the dance, from my usual skincare routine to makeup. My friends and I planned on making flower bouquets together before getting ready, but like usual, there’s always something else. We couldn’t do everything at one house, so we were making bouquets at one friend’s house before heading to mine to get dressed and do our makeup. We had two exchange students from a different school joining us as well, and I’ve only met one but the more, the merrier when we ended our night with a sleepover. The chaos is what makes it fun.
With all the last minute planning, I hardly had time to sit with my own emotions. The nerves of both my first and last Winterfest school dance. It is nerve wracking knowing that after this we will have prom, and then it’s already going to be so close to graduation. With one of the last dresses I will buy for a school dance and a wonderful group of friends to match, I couldn’t wait for a night filled with unforgettable memories.
