After what the boys Varsity Lacrosse team played what they thought would be a tough game, they came out with a 16-6 win against Detroit Catholic Central on Thursday, April 13. Senior midfielder Drew Bailey was happy with the win but knows that they have a lot more to improve on if they want to achieve their ultimate goal.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Drew and ask him some questions about the game and about the season to come.

Czarnecki: What were the keys to winning against DCC?

Bailey: “The keys to success were teamwork, communication, and ground balls. The key was our defense, mostly Jacob Demeter and Tate Bond.”

Q: Since it was supposed to be a competitive game, why do you think it was so one sided?

A: “They’re usually a powerhouse every year, but all of their seniors graduated, so they had no leadership. But overall, I just think we overcame a lot of things during the game that got us the win.”

Q: What are the team’s goals for the rest of the season?

A: “Our goal is always to play on June 11, the State Championship, but also to win Districts and Regionals and everything before that as well.”

Q: What does the team have to improve on?

A: “We have a lot of improving to do, including chemistry, overall team defense, and team offense. We’re not even close to where we need to be at the end of the season.”

Q: What is it like to have goalie Jack Nolan back?

A: “Having Jack back will be a huge help. He is a really experienced goalie even though he’s young. He understands the defense so well and the defense understands him, so things will improve a lot when he comes back.”

Q: Why is your team different than years past?

A: “We’re different this year than the past because there are close to twenty of us seniors on the team and the chemistry we have is like no other. We all get along really well; we’ve been playing together since 5th and 6th grade.”

Q: Does the chemistry you have right now, remind you of the 5th and 6th grade dream team? Does it bring back memories?

A: “It brings back lots of memories. It kind of feels the same, in the sense that Mr. Clay is the coach like 8th grade. The only thing that’s different is there are bigger games on the line.”

Q: What has Mr. Clay brought to the team?

A: “Mr. Clay has definitely brought more intensity to the table. We’re taking everything seriously, to make sure we get the W.”

On Friday, April 14, the boys played Grand Haven and won 18-6. Then on Saturday, April 15, they played East Grand Rapids, a rematch of the State Championship last year, and lost 18-9. The boys are looking to repeat their success as the season progresses.
