Girls varsity basketball preview: Forest Hills Northern Huskies

Regaining momentum with its win over Ottawa Hills on Tuesday, the varsity girls basketball team goes into tonight’s game hot. The Lady Rangers will face the Huskies of Forest Hills Northern in a huge rivalry game at home. The majority of FHC’s players stated that this was the game they were most looking forward to this season.

This game is about redemption for the Rangers, as FHN knocked FHC out of the District Finals last season on a last-second free throw. The Huskies bring in a 7-6 overall record — the Rangers 6-5 — and have recently had two big wins against Ottawa Hills and Holland Christian.

The Huskies have a very quick transition offense and a tight defense. FHN also has two star players: a 5a10 multi-talented post who is averaging a double-double per game, and an explosive transfer point guard who is just recently eligible to play. Leaders on the FHC defense, senior Breanna Probst and junior Claire Baguley, will be tasked with guarding these two Huskies. Breanna, with a speed advantage, will likely be able to shutdown the point guard and take away her driving ability. Claire, having an inch of height advantage on the post, will be key to limiting opportunities for FHN’s leading scorer tonight.

While the starting lineup is very athletic, Northern’s bench is not as deep or as talented as the Rangersa. FHC will look to outwork and tire out the opponent in order to pull ahead later in the game. This game will be physical and aggressive, as both teams are looking to get the win in this intense rivalry game.
