Varsity baseball splits double header with Northview
The varsity baseball team went on the road last night for a conference doubleheader against Northview. Two hard-fought games resulted in each team taking a win, FHC with a 4-1 victory and the Wildcats took home a 1-0 win in extra innings.
In game one the Rangers came out hot with the bats. Senior captains Jake Heilman and Miko Rodriguez both homered on solo shots for FHC to take a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Quality days at the plate from multiple people, including a 3-3 outing from Miko, led to 2 more runs scored in the 3rd inning. Northview showed some fight in the bottom of the 7th to get a run on the board, but FHC’s defense shut down the threat to take the 4-1 win.
Senior Nate Doolittle took the mound for all 7 innings to give up only 1 run and pick up 16 strikeouts in a dominant showing.
Game two of the night saw quiet bats from both teams, leaving a 0-0 game after regular play. The Rangers came up short again in the top of the extra inning, setting the stage for the Wildcats. With runners on second and third, an infield hit and fielder’s choice throw home couldn’t beat the Wildcat runner, ending the game 1-0.
Senior Johnny Irish pitched for 7 innings strong, letting up 0 runs with 19 first-pitch strikes and 4 strikeouts.
FHC will host the third game against the Wildcats at home on Wednesday to decide the winner of this conference series.
