Girls varsity tennis sweeps Greenville on Tuesday but struggles against EGR

The girls varsity tennis team took on Greenville at home and East Grand Rapids away the next day. It defeated the Yellow Jackets 8-0 but lost 7-1 against powerhouse division 2 team, East Grand Rapids. Sophomore Emily Johnson led the way for the Rangers winning both days at 4 singles. She had a back and forth match against her opponent from East but came out on top 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

2 doubles, consisting of senior Emily Benson and junior Isabella Notarnicola, defeated Greenville pretty handily just giving up four games; however, while this may seem like a blowout, the rest of the team just gave up four games altogether, dominating their opponents in both sets. Winning 6-0, 6-0, was freshman Libby Moog at 1 singles, Emily at 4 singles, and senior Myah Leavenworth and junior Courtney Fox at 3 doubles. Each of these flights played with an aggressive mentality and didn’t let up for all 12 games.

With Greenville being a conference opponent, this was a huge win for every flight ultimately securing them all second seed at the conference tournament. Seeded first at all eight flights is Forest Hills Northern, who will also be competing in regionals with the Rangers along with East Grand Rapids.

This East team, who some of the Ranger flights will play in regionals most likely, just defeated the Rangers at East 7-1. The only win came from the tough match at 4 singles with Emily Johnson. The next closest flight was 3 doubles, losing 6-3, 6-3.
