Boys JV Basketball team clinches championship at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament with win over FHE
In the boys JV Basketball championship game on Saturday the 4th, sophomores Ben Scholler and Jacob Bonnett lead the Rangers in every aspect of the game against Eastern. They both played phenomenally on defense and forced many turnovers, made important baskets, and encouraged their teammates along the way. The boys took over FHE and won by a large margin of 67-33.
The Rangers started off the game on the slow side and did not score many points by the time the first half had ended. Head coach Jordan George had to encourage the boys to make sure they picked up their intensity for the second half.
“I challenged our guys at the end of the first quarter and halftime to up their game and bring more energy, and the team responded extremely well,” George said. “Instead of their body language or attitude turning negative, they accepted the challenge and brought so much energy in the second half, especially on defense.”
Jacob made a three at the end of the half and got fouled as he went up for the shot, which was a huge moment and set the stage for the second half. Into the third quarter, the boys had their best quarter of the season so far. Ben also had multiple really nice passes in the second half to get the team moving. Sophomore Conner Milton and a lot of other guys also had a great game. The boys knew that they needed to rebound very well tonight, and the bigs did a great job of that.
“This tournament has been an example of how well we are capable of playing. For the rest of the year, we can look back at these games and use them as examples for what we are like when we are fully engaged and playing as a team,” said George. “Winning this tournament championship is obviously a great accomplishment for our guys, but we have a lot more to accomplish and a lot more work to do.”
The next game for the team is on Thursday, January 9th at 5:30 PM at Greenville High School.
