Boys varsity basketball wins 74-57 with late surge over Ottawa Hills

The boys varsity basketball team won on Tuesday after a late 13-0 run put the Rangers over the Ottawa Hills Bengals by a score of 74-57. Senior Jimmy Scholler’s 20 points in this game paved the way to the Rangers’ tenth conference victory, along with being the team’s third consecutive victory.

Along with leading the team in scoring, Jimmy led the team in rebounds, assists, and blocks. He grabbed 11 rebounds, with one on offense and ten on defense, five assists, and two blocks. His two blocks were matched by senior Mitchell Wilkinson and junior Chris Battiste. Mitchell had 15 points, two assists, and six rebounds in addition to his two blocks. Junior Jonah Spates’s three steals were the most from any Ranger, and he also had eight points and four assists.

The team was in for a surprise as the Bengals struck first and stayed within three points for the entire first quarter. A buzzer-beater from Ottawa Hills brought the first quarter score to 17-17. The second quarter was similar to the first, but the Rangers outscored the Bengals by three, making the score at halftime 34-31 in favor of FHC.

At the start of the third quarter, a 15-6 run from the boys gave them the most separation of the game leading up to that point. They would end up outscoring the Bengals again 18-12 in the third quarter which would give them an 11 point lead going into the fourth. The team scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and after Ottawa Hills tried mounting a comeback, the Rangers ended the game by scoring the last 13 points to bring the final to 74-57.

Now 10-0 in the OK White and 13-3 overall, the boys will be facing one of their toughest tests of the year when they travel to Forest Hills Northern to take on the Huskies. This game will take place on Friday, February 21st at 7:00 pm.
