The importance of role models for young girls is being forgotten
In today’s society, there are a multitude powerful women with high platforms that are ruining the minds of young girls.
When I turn on my TV, the first thing I see is Kim Kardashian. This is what society wants me and many other young girls to look like, or at least that’s what we think. So many things we see are just like Kim Kardashian: to make money and be famous, you have to be pretty and promiscuous; there’s no need for talent or smarts.
The issue is not that there is a lack of role models for girls in society; it is that there are none presented to us. In every big new show, the characters are absolutely ridiculous. For example, in the praised new show Riverdale, the show takes place in a small town focusing on a group of sophomores in high school. The actors that play these characters are all over the age of twenty and look it too. Not to say they aren’t beautiful, but the standards for young girls to look that good and grown-up is through the roof. This is not the only show to set these standards, but a popular, recent show isn’t helping young girls find a respectable role model.
Yet, another standard I feel is being shoved down young girls’ throats is the fact that it is okay to trash each other constantly. We all know it’s not okay, but when so many things we watch and do involves the judgment of others, it becomes second nature for us to put ourselves and one another down. We need a role model that stresses how negative trashing one another is.
Society is not giving young girls the idea to live to their full potential.
