A Hockey Team or a Brotherhood?
“Go Rangers!” “Go Green!” Both of these chants and more can be heard from outside of the building as it shakes with the anxiety from the players and fans in the stands. The pounding of fists on the glass slices the raw, crisp air. Breathes of air fog the glass from the howling tumbling from the coaches mouths. The buzzer rings through the ears of students and fans as their attention peaks up to the ice, pounding the glass continuously till the very last second on the clock. Then once all that subsides, the only feeling residing within each and every person within the ring is satisfaction, honor for being an FHC student.
FHC hockey games can only be summoned up with one word-derangement. Madness from the fans supporting the boys to the fullest, all the screaming and yelling it may take to perform their love and support.
“The players love playing in front of their peers, family and community,” Coach Kevin Zaschak said.
With many new and returning players, the team was left with only one choice- to bond and understand each other to benefit the team in the long run.
“The season kinda started out as a rough patch,” Junior and Captain Mackey Withey said. “We’re just a young team a lot of inexperienced guys and not a lot of chemistry right now but as the season moves, I think we will keep progressing.”
After all, the team holds the same goal, the goal of making a run in the playoffs at the end of the year, to compete for conference and Regionals.
“The boys are working hard with the new players getting better each day buying into our systems,” said Zaschak. “We graduated a lot of players who had been a part of the program for 3-4 years. This year’s seniors are a special group and they have been working hard since the end of last season. They were brought into our offseason training and are helping the younger players grow better each week.”
The seniors have not only made impacts on the younger, newer players, but on the whole team. The new captains this year have a tunnel of struggles ahead of them but are the only light to guide the rest of the team through this path of battles.
“I like our captains, it’s definitely not an easy job so we can’t really blame anything on them,” junior Zack Currie said. “They do their best. The captains definitely have a big impact on the team. We look up to them all.”
But, it is not only the captains who are the sticking glue to the team, but everyone else on it as well. The hockey team is a meet of brotherhood, filled with memories, experiences, knowledge and wisdom shared between a handful of boys. The impacts and inspiration shared between the boys demonstrates how much love is worn with the jersey each and every game.
