JV softball splits with Northview in conference-opener
Junior Maddy Wahl hit .500 on the night in 8 at-bats to lead the JV softball team in its doubleheader against Northview. The Rangers were able to split with the Wildcats, falling 12-8 in game one and blowing them out 18-1 in the second.
Sophomore Bela Gonzalez toed the mound against a potent Northview offense in game one while recording 8 strikeouts with 0 walks. The Wildcats racked up 19 hits, and the Ranger defense committed 4 errors to allow 12 runs for Northview.
Bela had a hot night at the plate, as she led the team by going 3-4. Maddy also went 2-4, while freshman Remmie Gavle had a big triple for her one hit in the game. The Rangers were able to score 8 with plenty of hits of their own, but FHC fell to the Wildcats 12-8 in its conference-opener.
The second game of the night saw an offensive explosion from the Rangers, as they were able to push 18 runs across. Freshman Lyra Vandenberg went 3-3 to lead the charge, while Maddy and Remmie both earned multiple hits. Junior Katie Willemin secured a triple, while sophomore Irene Collacchioni earned a hit in her very first softball game.
FHN freshman Alyssa Wierenga dominated in the circle, as she struck out 3, walked 2, gave up 2 hits, and allowed 1 run to score. The Ranger defense was flawless behind her, recording 0 errors in the game.
FHC moves to 1-2 (1-1) on the season and will go on the road to Northview for the third game of the series on Friday. A win tomorrow is key to the Rangers’ hopes at a conference title, as taking the series against Northview would be a big step in the right direction.
