Girls varsity tennis ties for first in Traverse City Central Quad with 17 points
More stories from Jeremy James
Thanks to FHC winning 2 flights on the day and every flight adding at least 1 win, the Rangers tied for first with Traverse City Central at the TCC quad. Freshman Libby Moog at 1 singles went 3-0 on the day, breezing through one of her matches but having to work hard and come from behind against Petoskey. 3 doubles, consisting of junior Courtney Fox and senior Myah Leavenworth, also won their flight without dropping a set all day.
The Rangers doubles flights were all successful, winning at least 2 matches each. Besides 3 doubles, each flight won twice. 1 doubles, consisting of seniors Lyndsay Werkema and Katie McClure, performed well, only losing in the third set tiebreak against TCC. Senior Emily Benson and junior Isabella Notarnicola at 2 doubles won all of their games besides one, losing to TCC 6-3, 6-2. At 4 doubles, junior Jenny Baer and sophomore Olivia Hooper lost against TCC by the same scores at 2 doubles.
While the doubles struggled against TCC, singles had a tough go versus Petoskey. Besides Libby battling back against Petoskey and winning 0-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the 10-point tiebreak, no other Ranger won at singles. The closest chance came at 3 singles with sophomore Emily Johnson losing 13-11 in the third set tiebreak. Junior Andrea Wang lost a close match against Petoskey losing 6-4 twice in a row. While sophomore Mina Siebert at 4 singles was the only Ranger to win just 1 match, she played well all day, losing a tough match against TCC 10-5 in the third set tiebreak.
The Rangers showed they could win and compete, and with more division 1 and conference matches coming up soon, matches will get tougher. With the team still having plenty of injuries, it should only get better for the Rangers. The Rangers will try to better their record when they compete next on Tuesday at home against Cedar Springs.
