Girls varsity tennis finishes second in tri in Lansing
More stories from Jeremy James
After finishing third in a tri in Portage, the girls varsity tennis team traveled to Lansing to compete in another tri. The Rangers competed against Okemos and Bloomfield Hills Marion, and they placed second. They won 6-2 against Okemos but lost 7-1 against Marion.
The lone Ranger to go undefeated on the day was 3 singles, junior Andrea Wang. She defeated Marion 6-3, 6-2 and didn’t lose a set all day. Against Okemos, only 3 doubles and 2 singles lost. At 4 doubles, sophomores Mina Siebert and Olivia Hooper, lost the first set 6-2 but overcame that and won 6-2. In the third set ten-point tiebreak, they won 13-11 on a huge overhead by Mina.
Against Marion—an all-girl school and athletic powerhouse—there were close matches but only Andrea could pull off the win. Freshman Libby Moog at 1 singles lost in the third set ten-point tiebreak 10-8, and sophomore Emily Johnson, playing 4 singles, lost the first set 7-6 and the seven-point tiebreak 8-6.
The Rangers have started to play much better during the past week and have a match at Lowell on Tuesday. This is a very important conference match, and all the flights need a win for better seeding in conferences.
