Varsity baseball splits with West Ottawa
Senior Kyle Wojczynski led the varsity baseball team to its win over West Ottawa by going 3-3 at the plate with 2 doubles and an RBI. The Rangers were able to squeak out a 2-1 win in game one but fell 9-3 in the second game of the night.
Kyle was able to knot this defensive slugfest up at 1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI double. Senior Adam Tellier then singled on the first pitch of the at-bat to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
FHC outhit the Panthers 11-4 in the close victory. Adam hit .500 in the first game, while seniors Dylan Tucker and Ethan Vredenberg each went 1-1. Ethan and junior Matthew Henricksen were the two players to cross home for FHC to take this one 2-1.
Senior Cole Coughlin got the start on the mound and allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. Adam came in for relief in the sixth and kept the Panthers off the board while allowing 1 hit with 3 strikeouts. The Rangers played errorless behind the mound to secure the win.
In the second game of the night, West Ottawa took the lead early and FHC couldn’t recover. The Panthers scored in the first inning on a triple, and 4 runs in the top of the seventh sealed the 9-3 victory. FHC was also outhit 10-5, as the Panthers’ bats were hot all game long.
Senior Luke Herzog went 2-2 with a run scored to lead the Rangers’ offensive campaign. Matthew and sophomore Joey Wise each went .500 at the plate in this game; Matthew also earned an RBI, while Joey was able to score a run.
Joey started for the Rangers on the mound and allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Seniors Jacob Hornbeck and Connor Palmitier each came in for relief and combined for 5 runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.
FHC moves to 12-10 and will play its last conference series against Greenville next week.
