Varsity ice hockey goes 1-1 over the weekend
This past weekend, the varsity ice hockey team took on two opponents. Friday night, they faced Bay City Western and came away with a high-scoring win, 7-0. On Saturday afternoon, the boys faced Saginaw Heritage and were a little less fortunate in this one, losing 6-0.
In Friday night’s game, the juniors on the team really showed up by scoring all 6 of FHC’s goals against Bay City. The key junior of the night was Peter Bardelli who had a hat trick to open the scoring for the Rangers. With the Rangers up 3-0 already, they weren’t done yet. Junior Ryan Jeffreys came out to put 2 more on the board for FHC. Rounding out the scoring for the night was junior Cole Munger with the sixth goal and junior Cole Beaufait who finished the scoring, leaving the Rangers up 7-0 at the end of the night.
Despite the momentum coming in from Friday’s game, the Rangers just couldn’t put anything up against the Hawks of Heritage High. FHC went into this one expecting a tough battle, as Heritage High was the State runner-up last season. The game opened up pretty even with a 0-0 score at the end of the first period. During the second period, the Hawks put in 2 goals, giving them the advantage. Finally in the third period, FHC struggled with penalties and allowed Saginaw to put up 4 more goals, making the score 6-0 with the Rangers suffering their first loss of the year.
With a record of 4-1 now, the varsity hockey team looks to continue its strong play heading into the upcoming games. After this weekend of home games, the boys will take the road in their next couple of matchups. The next game is Wednesday, Dec. 5 against Reeths-Puffer High School.
