Girls varsity basketball preview: Rockford Rams
The girls varsity basketball team comes into the second game of the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament off of a 56-44 win over NorthPointe Christian. The 4-1 Rangers will take on Rockford, who was the sole team to hand FHC a loss earlier last week.
Both teams had an off night when they played, but the game was rather evenly matched and ended in a 33-33 tie. The Rangers couldn’t come up with the clutch shot in the end and fell by 3 in overtime.
In the last matchup, FHC jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first quarter before allowing the Rams to work their way back into it. Rockford senior shooting guard Anna Glynn was nearly unstoppable and was largely responsible for keeping the Rams in the game with her ability to shoot outside and drive to the rim. Rockford also had multiple talented players around Anna that made them hard to shut down.
Freshman Theryn Hallock was the leading scorer for FHC last matchup, but the majority of her points came in the first two minutes of the game. The entire team posted low numbers across the stat lines for FHC last time, so the Rangers will look to play more consistently in order to get the win over Rockford. Playing to potential may be tricky for both squads, as they come off of an extended break for the holiday.
Senior Claire Baguley comes into this one off of a 30-point outing last Friday, while holding NorthPointe’s leading scorer to just 8 points. Claire will be key on both ends of the court in this upcoming matchup, as another explosive night from her could be the difference that puts FHC on top.
The Lady Rangers are hungry to avenge their only loss and will have motivation to pick up a win before entering conference play later next week.
