Girls varsity basketball preview: Greenville Yellow Jackets
The Lady Rangers enter their final week of the regular season at 12-5 (7-3) with two important games on the schedule. FHC will go on the road to the 8-9 (4-7) Yellow Jackets of Greenville Tuesday night.
When these two teams played earlier in the season, the Rangers won 53-42. This win was the beginning of some success for FHC, as it went on to win four of the next five conference games. Sophomore Zoe Lipke was a big spark for FHC last time and put up 8 points, a team-high 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Senior Claire Baguley had 18 points in the last matchup, and she was a big part of the second-quarter surge that put the Rangers just 2 points behind Greenville going into the half. FHC then had a breakout third quarter with a game-changing 12-0 run that would put the game away for good. The Rangers’ defense was suffocating in the second half and led to many offensive points.
The main threat the Rangers will have to subdue is Greenville senior guard Adele Kemp. Despite a combination of defensive tactics against her in the last game, Adele still managed to post 26 points. This very talented player can hit from the outside and find the bottom of the net off of floaters on a drive. FHC will likely not be able to entirely shut her down, but holding her to minimal scoring will be needed for the Rangers to take down the Yellow Jackets for the second time this season.
FHC comes off of a scare Thursday night when it let Cedar Springs hang around a little too long and played very sloppily. Greenville, behind Adele Kemp, has the ability to win against talented opponents, which is seen by the fact that the Yellow Jackets went 2-0 against Forest Hills Northern on the season.
The Rangers will need to play as a cohesive unit this week because when they do, it is a very hard team to beat. If FHC’s defense can keep leading to offensive production, look for the Rangers to take down a scrappy Greenville team and be primed to take on FHN on Thursday night.
