Girls varsity soccer defeats rival East Grand Rapids in 1-0 thriller
The lone goal of the game scored by freshman Lauren Koczenasz would eventually give the girls varsity soccer team the lift they needed over its rival East Grand Rapids to win a thriller 1-0. The defense showed up once again for FHC, as this is now their fifth consecutive shut out. The Lady Rangers now focus their attention to another conference game against the Greenville Yellow Jackets next Wednesday on their home turf.
The first half was yet again another defensive slugfest. EGR goalie Lydia Glowney was tested early with the FHC offense getting some great looks early. Junior Kelsey Toole and senior Ashley Ward did a great job of putting pressure on Lydia early and getting great offensive opportunities early. However, as the game went on, the opportunities went away and the Pioneer defense started to take over the game. FHC and EGR went into halftime tied 0-0.
East Grand Rapids came out firing at the start of the second half and caught the Lady Ranger defense off guard. After Ashley had a close shot in the middle of the second half, FHC kept getting shot after shot, but none of them could find their way into the net. Finally, with 7 minutes left in the game, Lauren Koczenasz put in the lone goal of the game to eventually give the Lady Rangers the win 1-0.
The Lady Ranger win puts their overall record at 8-2. FHC jumps back into conference action Wednesday when they take on Greenville.
