Girls Varsity Volleyball Takes the Victory in Three Sets
An overwhelming attack of kills and serves fuels FHC girls volleyball to an outright victory in only three sets.
It only took the Lady Rangers three sets to pick up the victory against Cedar Springs’ girls varsity volleyball team in an all out offensive attack on Tuesday night. Serve after serve, kill after kill, the girls seemed almost untouchable throughout the entire night. FHC was scoring points like a well-oiled machine and never gave in.
It has been a steady season for the Lady Rangers so far with a conference record of 3-1. The girls looked like they had been playing together for much more than just four games tonight, while communicating with ease and executing perfectly on every serve from their opponents. Head coach Lauren Heinz praised them for their strong team chemistry and their ability to gel on the court.
“We gained momentum as we went from one game to the next,” Heinz said. “We also had some players, who may not get the most playing time, really step it up and become the stand outs. It was great to see them get in there and make some things happen.”
Among those game changers was junior Louise Gallup. She was feeling it from behind the serve line tonight, serving four aces in a row and a total of thirteen serves overall. She credited her performance to the early momentum that the team gained after getting off to such a hot start.
“I was just really motivated to get it done quick,” Louise said. “We won the first two pretty quickly so I wanted to keep a streak and get going.”
To top off the superb service from Louise, the Lady Rangers let loose with an all out assault of kills from Senior Reese Weslow and Junior Kendall Gardener. Both were upbeat about the team’s performance after stealing three sets in a row. Reese has been on varsity since she was a sophomore and praised this year’s team on many different levels.
“We are a lot younger this year,” Reese said. “Our defense is much stronger this year too.”
Kendall Gardener spoke about how thrilled she is to be playing alongside a player with so much experience.
“It’s amazing [to be playing with Reese],” Kendall said. “She is really good, and we get super excited because she gets so many good kills.”
Heinz believes that the team’s strong bonding will carry them far this season.
“They are all best friends,” Heinz said. “They get along on and off the court, and they care about each other a lot.”
