Girls varsity field hockey loses playoff game against Ann Arbor Pioneer 7-2
Win or go home! The girls varsity field hockey team faced off against Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, and ended up losing 7-2. The girls had not played a game since October 13th, two weeks prior, so the team had to come prepared. They faced a familiar foe in the Pioneers; playing them two weeks before this game. They lost 7-0, so the girls wanted to get some vengeance on Tuesday. The girls could not pull one of their revenge tours losing 7-2 to the Pioneers. Some key players from the game were FHC junior Julia Brown, WMAA freshman Maddie Shaner, and FHC freshman Alayna Gshwind. Both Maddie and Julia scored and Alanya played out of her mind in goal, making some amazing saves.
A strong start from the girls gave the team confidence going into the 2nd quarter. Although they were down 1-0, the team felt like they should be up and that they had the momentum. The second quarter was a complete opposite of the first quarter. They lost most of the loose ball battles, but could not finish scoring opportunities, and gave up too many scoring opportunities. The Rangers ended the first half down 6-0. A new motivation became clear at halftime: they had nothing to lose. They looked like a totally different team in the second half, locking up on defense, winning the loose ball battles, and completing scoring opportunities. A faster pace and more physical finish is what the girls looked for and they did just that. The girls ended up losing 7-2, but more importantly, finished the game and season on a high note.
The girls finish the season 2-6-2 and a conference record of 0-4-2. A young team played better than expected, and as a result, the girls will be ready to go next fall. With only losing one player, the team looks to improve and take the next step towards a state championship.
