Donald Alm shows how sports can be beneficial for our habits

When senior Donald Alm first came to FHC in the fifth grade, it was not hard for him to find his own place. Wrestling has built him a community ever since he was young.

Donald has been wrestling for most of his life and believes one of the great parts of it is the community put him in.

“You can go anywhere, and if you know that someone wrestles, you can have a thirty or forty minute conversation with them,” Donald said.

Being a part of the wrestling community has given Donald respect for all wrestlers because he knows how beneficial it has been to him growing up.

“[Wrestling] lets you get to know your body and helps you in that awkward stage of puberty,” Donald said. “It lets you use it effectively to do something useful,” Donald said.

Wrestling has also taught him the value of doing difficult things. His discipline of practice, lifting, and eating healthily no matter the circumstance has taught him virtues many people don’t have.

“[Wrestling] helps me get through tasks that would normally present a challenge to other people and makes it easy for me because I’ve done something more difficult,” Donald said.

His main focuses, however, are his school work because he sees the long-term benefits it can contribute to his future. Like many people, he is undecided on what he wants to do but is still optimistic about it.

“Maybe it’ll take one or even three years to find out what I wanna do, but as of now I’d like to study engineering because I enjoy things like CAD and 3D design,” Donald said.
