Grace VanderWaal’s first album gracefully breaks the stereotypes of pop music
More stories from Courtney Collar
When I pressed play to listen to Grace VanderWaal’s newest and, more importantly, first album titled Just the Beginning, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Nevertheless, I am sure that this is just the beginning for VanderWaal and her music career.
In 2016, VanderWaal was a crowd favorite and the winner of America’s Got Talent all at the age of twelve. She wrote and sang heartwarming songs such as “I Don’t Know My Name” and “Beautiful Thing.” Since then, she has signed with both Columbia Records and judge Simon Cowell’s personal label Syco Music to write and record her own music.
As soon as I pressed play, I was instantly somewhere on a grassy knoll beside the ocean. While they are not necessarily songs that make you want to dance, it is impossible to not want to belt them out in your room and pretend you are in a music video. The overall sound of the album is very whimsical and wistful. Most of the songs are soulful, soft, and upbeat. The exceptions take on a minor tone while retaining that soulful aspect; the song “Burned” is a perfect example of this.
The level of maturity sewn into every one of the twelve tracks is astounding; sometimes, it is difficult to remember VanderWaal is only thirteen. VanderWaal’s view of the world is so innocent and untainted, but there is a level of understanding hiding there that belongs in the mind of someone far older. VanderWaal sings about real things and situations. “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me,” while not as upbeat as others, manages to weave mournful and hopeful together and embody both emotions at once. It is the song of someone who is struggling, yet she does an amazing job conveying a pure and youthful feel.
It has been known for some time that VanderWaal has one of the most interesting voices in the music industry. Her voice cracks and squeaks with emotion in a raw and beautiful way. This attribute of her voice is accentuated throughout the entire album by the contrast between the pure and cracked notes. Specifically, “A Better Life” puts this aspect of her voice on display. Her voice is a paradox. She sings with so much power and strength, yet her voice is soft and soothing which is heard in “City Song.” To top it all off, VanderWaal has a large vocal range. She showcases this particularly in “Sick of Being Told.” All these aspects come together to add texture to the music and create a sound comparable to no other.
Everything about Just The Beginning is so unique, and I can’t help but shower it with praise. Since I initially listened to it, I have been playing it nonstop. Needless to say, the album blew me away, and I would recommend it to anyone who prefers something other than the typical pop song.

Thank you for your positive review! I am one Grace’s older fans (60 something), and I enjoy the purity, and her viewpoint of life, and maturity of her songs tremendously! Her songs do have the effect of carrying me back in time to when I was younger and struggling to understand life. She is far more than Amazing in her talent, and I look forward to watching her grow and sharing her story in song of her adventures. Stories that often go untold by children her age. I pray for her safekeeping during her journey through life. Thank you Grace for your Love and Wisdom! I look forward to her next album, and the next! You are a Superstar!

I bought Grace Vanderwaal’s Just the Beginning, The Japanese Limited Edition which has 4 extra tracks on it. Normally when I buy a CD it is because I like 1 or 2 tracks, This time I hit the Jackpot as I like all the tracks. there are 2 tracks I especially like. one is “Darkness keeps chasing me” and the other is “Somewhere over the Rainbow” (which is used in the Honda N Box commercial). Graces rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow is superb. Go and listen to it on Youtube.

Grace’s music is magical, she touches your heart and soul with her songs. Her music is a break from your typical boy /girl relationship drama of today’s current pop music.

Well-written and perceptive review. What this girl has accomplished in the short period of time since her audition on AGT, 18 months ago (when she told us that only a few of her friends knew she sings), seems almost superhuman–going on to win AGT with original songs, her own 4-night show in Las Vegas, two successful albums of original music, almost daily interviews, guest performances, various charitable activities and appearances, featured performances at One Night for One Drop with Cirque du Soliel, the Winter Special Olympics, WE Day performances in a bunch of major cities, the first round of concerts in her sold-out tour around the country, opening and closing ceremonies at the Special Olympics, two concerts at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and recognition and awards from important organizations, not the least of which was Billboard’s giving her their prestigious “Rising Star” award at their annual “Women in Music” event–all the while, getting her schoolwork done. On top of all that, the work she has produced is of a style all her own and is of very high quality, showing unusual depth in both her music and her lyrics. In my opinion, she has already written three songs which posterity will consider to be “masterpieces,” namely, “Beautiful Thing,” “A Better Life,” and “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me.” We are lucky enough to have someone like Grace in our midst, but to see this artist evolve from being a complete unknown into someone who will be a major, perhaps legendary figure in the music world is all the more exciting.
