Girls varsity soccer defeats Caledonia 2-0 in District Semifinals
The Ranger girls soccer team took on the Caledonia Fighting Scots in its second round of Districts. The first District match against Wyoming did not happen, as the Wolves forfeited before the game started. The Rangers were looking to advance into the District Finals on Saturday, and in order to do so they would have to defeat Caledonia. After an intense matchup, the Rangers pulled out the 2-0 win.
The Rangers took the lead in the first half when junior Ashley Ward got the ball and dribbled through several people before ripping a shot that floated perfectly into the corner of the goal. The soccer team pulled up sophomore Jordan Helmbrecht to help them out in the playoff games, and Jordan pulled through in the second half. Getting the ball on the far right side, Jordan took a touch around the opposing team and shot the ball into the opposite corner of the goal from the top of the box. This gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead and ended the game.
Freshman Whitney Currie helped change the game for the Rangers and was able to connect passes up the field from the backline. Another key contributor for the Rangers was junior Chloe Grooters who played a great game at defensive center mid, along with senior Emma Yoder who had several key saves in the second half. Other key players were seniors Hannah Bowling and Ali Czarnecki. Hannah won most balls from the air and then had beautiful passes to Ali, who would bring it up the field and help create chances for the Rangers.
The Rangers play again on Saturday June 2 in the District Finals.
