Player Profile: Kara Bolger

Name: Kara Bolger

Grade: 12

Sport: Girls swim and dive

How long have you been swimming?
“I’ve only been swimming since sixth grade, so that is about six years.”
Why do you swim?
“I swim because I love the feeling of accomplishment that I get after I finish a really hard practice. Also I could never picture myself doing any other sport. Another reason I swim is for my fellow Lady Rangers.”
What stroke do you swim?
“I swim sprint Freestyle.”
Who has been the biggest motivation in your swimming career?
“My coach, [Dennis Neat], is my biggest motivator. He motivates the entire team and he is the one who keeps us going. There is no way I would be able to complete any practice without being pushed to go harder or being taught ways to correct my stroke and go faster.”
What is your personal goal for this season?
“Personally, I am hoping to make it to States. I am a little more than a second away in the 50-yard Freestyle, which is hard to drop in a sprint race. The key for me to achieve this goal is to work hard in practice and push myself to my limits because it will make me stronger.”
What are some team goals for this season?
“This season we are hoping to win all of our conference dual meets and even win the conference meet.”
Talk a little about your time being a part of FHC swim team, this year and previous years.
“The FHC swim and dive team has been hands down the best part of high school for me. It has shown me what it’s like to have a team that is more like a family, I don’t think that there is a group of people that I am closer to than my swim family. Swimming is not an easy sport, it is actually very hard and requires a lot of training. Waking up at 5:00 am to jump into the pool, then go to school and then go back to practice is nowhere near easy, but it truly is worth it in the long run. Swim has shown me how hard work really does pay off and it has given me a sense of accomplishment when I finally get the times I’ve been working for. This year has been amazing so far. Being a captain of the swim and dive team has been one of the best parts of my swimming career and I love that I get to lead the team with my best friends, Katie Johnson and Jessica Schellenboom.”
What is a quote that inspires you?
“You will never know your limits until you push yourself to them.”
What is the best part of swimming?
“The best part about swimming is the team. Without them motivating me I would not be able to make it through the season, let alone each practice. We are super close because we spend so much time together; some of us spend almost four hours a day together when you add morning and afternoon practices.”
