Freshman/JV football preview: Greenville Yellow Jackets

The Ranger freshman and JV football team will look to wrap up their seasons with a combined-team victory this week. The Greenville Yellow Jackets are short on players, so both schools decided to combine their two teams for a game. The freshman team is 7-1 and riding a five-game win streak, while the JV team is 4-4 while winning two in a row.

Head coach for both teams Ty Hallock will have to be creative with his subbing, as the combined team has upwards of 60 players. The Ranger defense will be led by linebackers sophomore Danny Dykstra and freshman Tyler Weaver. The combined secondary of sophomores George Cobb and Evan Van Artsen and freshmen Benny Scholler and Jacob Bonnett will look to form an unbeatable defense in the air and shut down the Yellow Jackets’ passing game. The defensive line led by sophomore Jason Downey and freshmen Conner Milton, Stevie Wolf, and Carter Kelly will look to stuff the run along with their linebackers.

When combining for other games, the joint Greenville team comes in with a 1-3 record. They suffered two huge blowout losses to both Lowell and Cedar Springs. The normal JV team for the Rangers defeated Lowell handily last week 33-8, however was also beaten by Cedar Springs by a score of 44-7. The Rangers will be looking to exploit Greenville’s run defense with running back Tyler, who is filling in for the recent varsity pull-up sophomore Sawyer Bosch. The freshmen quarterback duo of Hunter Robinson and Josh Smith should be able to pick the Yellow Jacket defense apart, as Greenville simply gives up a lot of yards and points on the ground and through the air.
